Cubs agree to 2021 contract with Ryan Tepera, DFA righty

MESA – The Chicago Cubs today agreed to terms on a 2021 major league contract with right-handed pitcher Ryan Tepera. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. was designated for assignment.

Tepera, 33, posted a 3.92 ERA (9 ER/20.2 IP) with an 0-1 record and two holds last season with Chicago. He walked 12, struck out 31 and allowed just two home runs in 89 batters faced, holding the opponent scoreless in 16 of his 21 outings. Tepera limited opponents to a .227 average (17-for-75) with a .684 OPS, including a .188 average (6-for-32) and .638 OPS from left-handed batters.

All told, Tepera is 12-12 with 41 holds, 10 saves and a 3.66 ERA (96 ER/236.0 IP) in 237 career major league games, all but one in relief, spanning all or part of six seasons with Toronto (2015-19) and the Cubs (2020). He has struck out 234 batters in 236.0 IP with a 1.18 WHIP while limiting foes to a .306 on-base percentage.

Underwood, 26, has gone 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA (21 ER/36.1 IP) in 30 games (one start) for Chicago in all or part of three seasons from 2018-20.
