Cubs make decision on Cole Hamels

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs will not offer veteran pitcher Cole Hamels a one-year, $17.8 million qualifying offer according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.

Since the Cubs didn't offer him a contract, they will not get any draft pick compensation attached to him.

This is the first time that Hamels will be a true free agent in his career. FanGraphs has a projection of a two-year, $28 million contract for a prospective buyer. It's not likely that the Cubs will go that route with his age, but he is still a viable pitcher for any team that picks him up.

Hamels had a 7-7 record (27 starts only with an oblique injury) with a 3.81 ERA and 143 strikeouts last season.

For his standout MLB career, the 36-year old has a 163-121 record with a 3.42 ERA with 2558 strikeouts.
