Cubs News: Rehab updates for Carl Edwards Jr., Cole Hamels

by - Senior Writer -

Good news concerning a pair of injured Chicago Cubs pitchers emerged on Monday, with Cubs beat writer Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune reporting that reliever Carl Edwards Jr. and starter Cole Hamels are on track to return to the Cubs in the fairly near future. The two pitchers have been dealing with similar injuries, as Edwards has battled a left thoracic strain while Hamels has been suffering from a left oblique strain.

Edwards has not pitched in the majors since early June but has fared well in three appearances for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs since then. Gonzalez reported that Edwards is set to pitch again for Iowa on Tuesday, and if the outing goes well, Edwards could potentially be activated by Chicago within the next week or so. Edwards is currently on the injured list.

As for Hamels, who has been on the injured list since straining his left oblique in late June, he threw several warmup tosses from 120 feet on Monday, which is a positive sign that Hamels is progressing well on his road to recovery. There is no word at this time as to what all Hamels' route to returning to the mound for the Cubs will entail. The lefty could potentially make a rehab start in the minors but could also resume pitching for the North Siders as soon as he is fully healthy.
