CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today agreed to terms with outfielder Jake Marisnick on a major league contract for 2021 with a mutual option for the 2022 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In a corresponding move, outfielder Phillip Ervin has been designated for assignment. Chicago’s 40-man roster stands at 40 players.

Marisnick, 29, is a career .229 hitter (395-for-1,724) with 80 doubles, 10 triples, 56 home runs, 183 RBI and 73 stolen bases in 701 games with the Marlins (2013-14), Astros (2014-19) and Mets (2020). He has 549 games played in center field, 53 games in right field and 51 games in left field while his 71 defensive runs saved since 2013 rank ninth among all outfielders. Marisnick in 23 postseason games has batted .333 (7-for-21) with a double and two stolen bases.

The right-handed hitter last season batted .333 (11-for-33) with three doubles, two homers and five RBI in 16 games during his lone season with the Mets, as he was twice on the injured list with hamstring issues. In 2019 with the Astros, Marisnick committed one error in 198 total chances in center field, posting a .995 fielding percentage that led A.L. center fielders.

Originally selected by Toronto in the third round of the 2009 draft out of Riverside (Calif.) Poly High School, Marisnick was traded to Miami in a 12-player deal on November 19, 2012, and made his major league debut with the Marlins in 2013.

Ervin, 28, was claimed off waivers from Seattle on December 22 of last year. He appeared in 37 games between the Reds and Mariners in 2020.
