LOOK: Anthony Rizzo arrives at game wearing Jon Lester's Cubs jersey |
CHICAGO — Monday night marks the return of former Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lesterto Wrigley Field, as the left-hander is pitching for the Washington Nationals in the first meeting between the two clubs since Lester signed with the Nats in the offseason. Lester was not only a fan favorite while pitching for the Cubs from 2015-20 but was also a clubhouse favorite, becoming a leader in the locker room and helping lead the North Siders to the 2016 World Series title.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was one of Lester's closest friends when the two were teammates, and Rizzo paid tribute to Lester prior to Monday's matchup by wearing a Lester Cubs jersey to the ballpark. He also donned cowboy boots, which Lester regularly wears. Cubs center fielder Ian Happ, joined Rizzo in wearing cowboy boots, and he also sported a cowboy hat, another Western-themed staple of Lester's wardrobe. As for "Big Jon" himself, he was dressed much more casually when showing up at the Friendly Confines, but there is no doubt he appreciated the thoughtful gestures by Happ and Rizzo.
