WATCH: Anthony Rizzo on his heated dugout confrontation with Willson Contreras |
With the Cubs trailing the San Francisco Giants 8-5 at the end of the seventh inning, catcher Willson Contreras and first baseman Anthony Rizzo became heated with one another, and manager David Ross held Rizzo back from confronting Contreras.
Rizzo spoke with the media following the loss and said emotional displays happen from time to time between teammates. "I think everyone in the clubhouse, we have fun in here," Rizzo said. "We will also butt some heads on things. We have high stakes at hand and we know that. The way he plays for this team, for our city, you can’t match it in this league. It’s just one of those incidents. I think in any work environment, you are going to run in things here and there. But when I think we are as close-knit as we are, these things happen. It was on TV unfortunately, it is easy for us to move past it. That half inning was easy for us to keep going and play baseball." Rizzo finished up by saying that Contreras is like a brother to him. It's easy to talk to each other like we’re brothers…I love Willson.” Anthony Rizzo goes a little further than the typical 'keep it in the clubhouse' answer, but still keeps it pretty general in a response to Bruce Levine about his dugout confrontation with fellow superstar Willson Contreras Friday night in San Francisco. @Cubs #GoCubsGo https://t.co/eRGXYy0KUw pic.twitter.com/5Dz13UXxdz
Ross didn't think the heated dugout incident was much to write home about. "Just a disagreement on some competitive stuff.... I don't think it's anything that's a huge deal."
