CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Jake Arrieta on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring tightness and recalled right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott from Triple-A Iowa.
Abbott, 25, begins his third stint with the Cubs as he has pitched to a 4.32 ERA (4 ER/8.1 IP) with no record in four relief appearances, walking five and striking out six. He made his major league debut, June 5 in San Francisco, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings. In eight starts for Iowa this season, Abbott is 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA (27 ER/41.1 IP), 18 walks and 64 strikeouts, good for an average of 13.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. Abbott, the 2019 Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year, was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Loyola Marymount University and is 17-17 with a 3.24 ERA (114 ER/317.0 IP) in 61 career minor league starts. He has recorded a 1.19 WHIP and averaged 10.8 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, striking out 379 batters with 112 walks. Arrieta, 35, is 5-9 with a 6.30 ERA (52 ER/74.1 IP) in 17 starts for Chicago this season. He has walked 36 and struck out 66 batters.
