Cubs reduce spring roster to 44 players

MESA – The Chicago Cubs today assigned 11 players to minor league camp, reducing the spring roster from 55 to 44 players.

In addition, the team has activated right-handed pitcher Tommy Nance off the COVID-19 related injured list and designated him for assignment.

Right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott and outfielder Greg Deichmann have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Anderson Espinoza and left-handed pitcher Brailyn Marquez have been optioned to Double-A Tennessee.

Seven non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: Right-handed pitcher Ben Leeper, left-handed pitchers Conner Menez and Locke St. John, infielders Dixon Machado, Chase Strumpf and Andy Weber, and outfielder Brennen Davis.

Chicago’s spring roster of 44 players consists of 24 pitchers (which includes eight non-roster invitees), five catchers (two non-roster invitees), eight infielders (one non-roster invitee) and seven outfielders.
