Ranking the Chicago Cubs Top 2024 Moments |
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
As we celebrate a new year, we at CubsHQ decided to rank the top 10 moments for the Chicago Cubs in 2024. Here is part 1 of our list: 10. PCA’s Go ahead home run Pete Crow-Armstrong had some electric moments during his first full season in the big leagues. From web-gem-type catches to inside-the-park home runs, PCA had his elite skills on display all season long. However, he had a bit of a slow start to his career — that all changed when he delivered a clutch, go-ahead home run vs the Astros in April to complete the sweep at Wrigley. It happened to be his first major league hit and home run.
9. 4th of July comeback
As has been the case over the last few seasons, the Cubs faltered a bit in May and June. Right around the 4th of July, the sense of urgency comes that says, ‘Hey, if we don’t get our act together, we might be selling at the trade deadline,’ that was no different in 2024. After being down 2-0, the Cubs rattled off 10 straight runs against MLB’s best Phillies en route to a 10-2 win on Independence Day. Ian Happ led the way with a stellar 4-4 day that included two three-run homers and six RBI — and the Cubs won six of their next seven games to follow.
8. Shota’s Debut
Shota Imanaga had an excellent rookie season, and this will not be the last time you see him on this countdown — but his first start in a Cub uniform was possibly as memorable as any of them. The Cubs shutout the Rockies 5-0, and Imanaga delivered six shutout innings, allowing just two baserunners and striking out nine. It was the first glance at SHOTAMANIA, and he continued to dazzle throughout his rookie year.
7. Busch’s historic stretch
Don’t let the fact that this happened in April distract you from how historic it was. From April 10 to April 16, Michael Busch homered in five straight Cubs games. With homers against the Padres, the Mariners, and the D-Backs, Busch cemented his name in the Cubs’ record book — tying Christopher Morel (2023), Sammy Sosa (1998), Ryne Sandberg (1989) and Hack Wilson (1928) as the only Cubs to ever accomplish the feat. Busch had a strong rookie season propelled by his historic power surge.
6. Come-from-behind thriller
In August, just as the Cubs had begun to creep above the .500 mark in the standings delivered a signature win in Pittsburgh. After trailing 10-3 in the 7th, the Cubs scored 11 unanswered runs in the game’s final three innings to stun the Pirates, 14-10. Back-up catcher Christian Bethancourt was the hero — 3-5 with a HR and seven runs driven in. Pete Crow-Armstrong had a four-hit day, and Ian Happ drove in a pair. The comeback helped put some faith in the Cubs’ playoff push.
