Injury updates on Javier Baez, other injured Cubs |
CHICAGO — The injury bug has plagued the Chicago Cubs in recent weeks, resulting in multiple key players winding up on the injured list. On Tuesday, center fielder Jake Marisnick became the latest North Sider to get placed on the 10-day IL after straining his right hamstring on Sunday.
Manager David Ross described Marisnick's injury as a "mild to moderate" strain but did not provide a timetable for the outfielder's return to action. As for shortstop Javier Baez, who was not in Tuesday's starting lineup due to back tightness, Ross cited him as being "day to day." Baez dealt with back tightness over the weekend, causing him to come off the bench on Sunday, and Ross said on Tuesday that Javy could potentially start on Wednesday. Right fielder Jason Heyward was pulled late in Sunday's game due to an issue with his right hand but started in Tuesday's game at Progressive Field against the Cleveland Indians. Apparently, he might be dealing with a bone bruise that is not too severe to prevent him from playing. Ross said it's a "mild to moderate" hamstring strain for Marisnick. No timeline given right now. As far as center fielder Ian Happ and second baseman Nico Hoerner, they are progressing as they work their way back from a recent violent collision in the outfield. Both players are currently on the IL but are reportedly faring well in their recoveries, with Hoerner fielding ground balls as of Tuesday. Ross and the rest of the Cubs organization assuredly hope that the Cubs' recurring injury problem soon becomes a thing of the past. Cubs injury updates:
Javy is "day to day." Was doing better, but back still a little stiff pregame. And Ross didn't want to push it.
Heyward's hand doing better. Maybe a bone bruise. Not serious.
-Javy's back tightened up but if he feels better, he could be back in the lineup Wednesday.
-Marisnick has a mild to moderate hamstring strain.
-Heyward has "no complaints" on his hand issue.
-Happ moving in right direction, Nico taking grounders.
