Cubs News: Jake Arrieta after another dismal performance: "I still have a lot left in the tank" |
Eleven games and counting in the loss column in a row for the Northsiders.
Cubs veteran Jake Arrieta has had a rough time of it of late with a terrible 8.55 ERA in his last 12 starts which is the worst mark in the majors during that span. During Tuesday night's loss against the Phillies, Arrieta lasted just 1 2/3 innings, not really giving his team a realistic shot at a victory. Arrieta spoke to the media following the game and believes that his career is not over as a starter. “This sucks,” Arrieta said. “Really, it does. But I'm not going to hang my head. I still have a lot left in the tank. There's no question about that. The stuff plays; the execution’s not there. It hasn't been for a while but I've been in similar situations in my career. I've been in worse situations than this." Cubs manager David Ross still has faith in Arrieta despite his struggles. “I still feel like there's a better version of him in there somewhere,” Ross said of Arrieta. “I think it's on him and us to try to figure out how to unlock that. I've seen too many good outings to believe this version of him. Maybe that's me being naïve, but I know that there's more in there.”
