In a year where the Cubs did not have a lot of consistency in their bullpen, especially late in games both Steve Cishek and Brandon Kintzler were mostly reliable for Joe Maddon. Full Story »
I think with the problems of starters going deep into games late last season, it pretty much taxed an already weak bull pen. Hopefully with a new manager and pitching coach who will not overuse "trusted" relievers, this won't be a problem in 2020. There is nobody in the minors that impressed out of the pen last year, although they did get some big league experience. If Theo doesn't add to the bullpen through a trade during the winter meetings then we have to sign at least Kintzler in my opinion. I feel like Tyler Chatwood would be worth a look as a starter again. He pitched well out of the pen in the second half. I don't think they will sign Cole Hamels. And we have traded away good young position players which depleted our options. Theo will have to be a magician to fix the pitching issues that plagued this team in the second half. Which means he would have to use proven veteran players (Bryant, Contreras, Baez, Schwarber) as trade bait. Not to be a Debbie downer but I don't think Ian Happ, Addison Russell, Albert Almora or David Bote would get any bites as to a front line pitcher.
