The Chicago Cubs have signed utility player Hernan Perez to a minor league deal that could be worth one million if he makes the majors and up to two million with incentives according to multiple reports.
Perez's contract includes an invite to Spring Training as he will have a chance to make a roster spot to fill the gap with the departure of infielder Addison Russell. The former Brewer has played every position but catcher in his 8-year major league career. In 2019, the 28-year old had a tough year at the plate batting only .228. Another low risk move by the Cubs to add depth in the minor league and potentially compete for the coveted 26th roster spot on the team. It should be an interesting competition in spring training between him, Tony Kemp, and Daniel Descalso if all three are still on the squad. Can confirm @JonHeyman’s report that the Cubs have agreed to a Minors/NRI pact with UTIL Hernán Pérez, per a source. Has 88 wRC+ vs lefties in his career, compared to 64 vs righties. Can play all over the diamond. Bench depth candidate.
