Cubs announce several roster moves

CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain and outfielder Carlos González has been designated for assignment. Right-handed pitchers Dillon Maples and Rowan Wick have been recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Both Maples and Wick will be available for the Cubs this afternoon when they continue their three-game series at the Cincinnati Reds.

Maples, 27, joins the Cubs for the third time this year, as he has gone 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (5.2 IP) in seven relief appearances with the Cubs during his first two stints from April 26-May 6 and May 25-June 4. He has limited foes to a .059 batting average (1-for-17) with nine walks and 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings. He has gone 0-3 with three saves and a 4.95 ERA (11 ER/20.0 IP) in 19 outings with Iowa this season, striking out 39 while walking 18 in 20.0 innings and limiting foes to a .121 batting average.

The righthander has spent parts of the last three years in the big leagues with the Cubs, going 2-0 with a 7.16 ERA (13 ER/16.1 IP) in 22 relief outings, as he has recorded 30 strikeouts and issued 20 walks in 16.1 innings.

Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. Overall, he is 15-23 with 37 saves and a 4.35 ERA (147 ER/304.1 IP) in 195 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering eight minor league seasons. Over the last three seasons, he has struck out 214 batters in 122.0 innings across three minor league levels.

Wick, 26, joins the Cubs for the third time this season, as he has posted no record and a 2.45 ERA (1 ER/3.2 IP) in three relief outings during his previous stints from May 22-23 and June 15-23. He has no record with four saves and a 2.22 ERA (7 ER/28.1 IP) in 20 relief outings with Iowa this year, striking out 34 batters and walking only eight in 28.1 innings while limiting foes to a .215 batting average against and posting a 1.09 WHIP.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Wick made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres last year and went 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA (6 ER/8.1 IP) in 10 relief appearances. With Triple-A El Paso last season, he went 2-0 with nine saves and a 1.99 ERA (5 ER/22.2 IP) in 20 relief outings. Wick was acquired by the Cubs from San Diego on November 20, 2018 for infielder Jason Vosler.

A native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Wick was originally selected by St. Louis in the ninth round of the 2012 Draft out of Cypress Community College. He was a catcher/outfielder for his first four pro seasons before converting to a pitcher during the 2015 campaign. Overall, he is 8-6 with 30 saves and a 2.74 ERA (52 ER/171.0 IP) in 150 minor league relief appearances covering the last five seasons.

Hamels, 35, has gone 6-3 with a 2.98 ERA (33 ER/99.2 IP) in 17 starts with the Cubs this season.

González, 33, signed with Cleveland this past March and batted .210 (22-for-105) with two homers and seven RBI in 30 games before being designated for assignment on May 22. He signed a minor league deal with Chicago on June 1 and had his contract selected by the Cubs on June 3. He batted .175 (7-for-40) with one homer and three RBI in 15 games with the Cubs.
