Roster Moves: Cubs activate infielder from COVID-19 list, demote Ildermaro Vargas |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Matt Duffy from the COVID-19 related injured list and returned infielder Ildemaro Vargas to the South Bend Alternate Site.
Duffy, 30, was placed on the COVID-19 related injured list on Tuesday. He has batted .125 (1-for-8) with a double and a walk in seven games for Chicago after signing a minor league deal with the organization in December of last year. Duffy was a non-roster invitee to major league Spring Training after signing a minor league deal with Chicago in December of 2020. He owns a .281 career average (457-for-1,624) with 75 doubles, nine triples, 22 home runs and 169 RBI in all or part of six seasons with the Giants (2014-16), Rays (2016, 2018-19) and Cubs. Vargas, 29, is 0-for-2 for Chicago this season, coming off the bench in two games during the Cubs recent series in Milwaukee. He was claimed off waivers from Minnesota September 5 of last season and hit .222 (2-for-9) with a solo home run in six games for the Cubs in 2020.
