Allen Robinson interested in extension with Bears

by - Senior Writer -

Two offseasons ago, the Chicago Bears began to transform their roster by adding tons of weapons around Mitch Trubisky on the offensive side of the ball. One of those off-season signings happened to be Allen Robinson, who has proven once again he is a legitimate number one receiver on any team.

After a solid run in Jacksonville, Robinson landed in Chicago, where he led the team in receiving last season. This season, Robinson upped his production to top the 1000-yard mark and has been not only the most consistent player on offense but one of the few bright spots. Along with leading his team in receiving yards, Robinson also leads them in catches, touchdowns, and plays that make you yell EXTEND HIM as he genuinely is the No. 1 option in the passing game.

His 1000-yard season was a rare feat for Chicago as he became the first Bear since Alshon Jeffrey in 2014 to top 1000 yards receiving. Even though he still has a few years left on his contract, it certainly appears that Robinson wants to stay in Chicago long term as he is open to a contract extension soon with his current three-year deal ending next season.

“I love Chicago, and an extension is definitely something I would be open to,” Robinson reiterated in an interview with Bill Zimmerman. “As far as going down that road, I know there is a lot of things that need to go into a decision like that, so I am not thinking about it too much right now. However, with all the community work I do around here, and how much I love this city, coming back to Chicago with a new deal in place would certainly be something I would be interested in.”

Ever since he took the field for the first time in a Bears uniform last season, Robinson has been a fan favorite in Chicago. Between his consistent play and community work, there is a lot to like about this man both on and off the field. Naturally, keeping this man in Chicago is going to start to come up in conversations over the next year or so. Still, if I was the Bears, an extension for Robinson should be a priority sooner rather than later.

Given what he has said about the city itself and his openness to returning to the Bears, it is undoubtedly good news for a franchise who has lacked that consistent leader in the receiving core since both Jeffrey and Brandon Marshall left via free agency nearly seven years ago. With other reliable receivers in Taylor Gabriel, Riley Ridley, and the fast-rising Anthony Miller, Chicago have the most solid receiving core that they have had in years.

The only issue may be keeping them together long term. We already know all of them will be back next season, but Robinson's deal up following the 2020 season and Gabriel the year after the Bears need to focus on locking Robinson up now to help them moving forward. Not much has gone right for Chicago this season, but getting a deal done with Robinson would be a considerable boost. Now make it happen, Chicago.
