Cubs recall Colin Rea, option righty |
CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Colin Rea from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. Right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples was optioned to the South Bend Alternate Site after last night’s game.
Rea will be available for the Cubs tonight when they conclude their four-game series at the Cincinnati Reds. Rea, 30, returns to the big leagues for the first time since 2016 with the Marlins. He went 14-4 with a 3.95 ERA (65 ER/148.0 IP) in 26 starts with Iowa in 2019, earning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year honors in addition to mid-season and post-season PCL All-Star team nods. The righthander, who signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in January 2019, has pitched parts of two seasons in the majors with San Diego (2015-16) and Miami (2016), going 7-7 with a 4.69 ERA (70 ER/134.1 IP) in 26 career big league outings, all but one as a starter. Rea missed the 2017 season due to Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Maples, 28, has no record and an 18.00 ERA (2 ER/1.0 IP) in two relief outings with the Cubs this year. Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster remains at 57 players, with 30 active players (plus two 10-day injured list players) in Chicago and 25 players in South Bend.
