Down on the Farm: 1-0 record, two rainouts, one suspended game, more

by - Senior Writer -

It was a rather easy night on the Farm as just two of the four teams were action. That soon turned into one team as rain played a huge factor forcing one suspension and two postponements during the night. That means that Iowa was the lone team to finish their game and managed to do so picking up the win for the 1-0 Farm record.

IOWA CUBS 10 – Oklahoma City Dodgers 4: The Cubs offense was in full force Friday night as they hit the road to take on the Dodgers. It wasn’t until late in the game when Iowa got things rolling as one big inning was enough for the win.

For the second straight start, Collin Rea was relatively strong lasting six innings with four strikeouts. His three earned runs allowed had him clinging to the lead when he left, but the work of Brian Duensing who collected the win and Dillon Maples out of the pen gave the Cubs a chance as they picked it up offensively. Maples was very sharp in his outing striking out three with zero walks in 1 2/3 innings.

It was a back and forth game early on as the teams exchanged blows in third and fourth innings. A Daniel Castro RBI groundout responded a Johnny Field homer in the third in the bottom half for the 1-1 tie. Zach Borenstein stayed hot with an RBI single in the fourth, but the Dodgers responded with a Cameron Perkins double to draw even again 2-2.

The Cubs appeared to be pulling away in the sixth after a Wynton Bernard triple, and Francisco Arcia single made it a 4-2 game heading to the bottom of the sixth. Once again, the Dodgers responded with a pair of runs in their next two at-bats as Edwin Rios homer, and Jake Peter single brought things to 4-4 heading into the eighth. That is when the Cubs offense began to catch fire.

It was all about patience in this inning as all six runs came with two outs. With three consecutive walks loading the bases, Dixon Machado made it four-straight to give the Cubs the lead for good at 5-4. Field followed that up with a bases-clearing double and just like that we had an 8-4 game.

The Iowa offense managed to load the bases again with a pair of walks before Borenstein capped off the scoring with a single to lift the Cubs 10-4.

Borenstein and Field were indeed the spark plugs in this game combining for five hits and seven RBI’s in the game. Ian Happ only had two plate appearances going 0-1 with a walk, and Trent Giambrone picked up another hit. The Cubs move to 9-6 on the season.

TENNESSEE SMOKIES 2 – Jackson Generals 1 (Suspended after 3): Looking to solve the mystery of the Generals, the Smokies had an early 2-1 lead over Jackson before weather suspended the game in the fourth inning. The game will continue the next time these two meet up.

MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS vs. Lynchburg Hillcats: Postponed due to rain. Game to be made up as Double Header Saturday.

SOUTH BEND CUBS vs. Lake County Captains: Postponed due to rain and wind. Double-Header scheduled for Saturday.
