Cubs News: Tyler Chatwood demoted to the bullpen

The Cubs' starting rotation has been changed with the acquisition of veteran lefty Cole Hamels.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said during pregame of Saturday's rivalry game with the Cardinals that struggling starter Tyler Chatwood will be moved to the bullpen. He will be available out of the pen starting on Tuesday.

For the season, he had a 4-5 record with 4.98 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 19 starts.

Chatwood handled the news well as he talked to the media before Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

"I'm not going to lie, I've been grinding all year and it hasn't been fun grinding that hard. Luckily we've been winning games I've started and that eases it a little. I'm excited to get back to what I know I can be."

Chatwood realizes that he has some mechanical issues with all the walks he gives per start.

You never want that, but there’s stuff I need to work out," he said.

Hamels will make his first start on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cubs rotation will have Jose Quintana today, followed by Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester on Tuesday, Cubs debut of Hamels on Wednesday, and Mike Montgomery gets the ball on Thursday.
