Cubs acquire LHP from San Diego Padres

Cubs Media Relations -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian has been designated for assignment.

Cosgrove, 28, is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA (29 ER/66.0 IP) and one save in 72 career major league games, all in relief, with the Padres. The left-handed pitcher made his major league debut in 2023 and posted a 1.75 ERA (10 ER/51.1 IP) in 54 appearances during the campaign. The 1.75 ERA and his .173 opponents average (31-for-179) both led all qualified major league rookie relievers. Cosgrove finished that season in the 100th percentile in the major leagues in hard hit percentage (25.5%) and average exit velocity (83.9 mph) and in the 95th percentile in barrel percentage (3.6%).

A 12th round pick of the Padres in 2017, the six-foot two-inch Cosgrove attended Manhattan University (N.Y.) where he pitched for three seasons. In 163 career minor league games (38 starts) all in the Padres system, Cosgrove is 16-19 with a 3.79 ERA (135 ER/320.2 IP), two saves and 359 strikeouts.

Kilian, 27, is 0-4 with a 9.22 ERA (28 ER/27.1 IP) in eight career major league games (five starts) since debuting in 2022. He is 22-11 with a 3.74 ERA (164 ER/394.1 IP) in 94 career minor league games (83 starts) with the Giants (2019-21) and Cubs (2021-25).
