The Chicago Cubs have released lefty reliever Matt Dermody so he can sign with NPB's Seibu Lions.
Dermody signed a one-year deal with the Lions and will make more money in Japan than his minor league deal with the Cubs. This is the second time this has happened to the Cubs this offseason as pitcher Colin Rea also made a move to Japan. The good news with the Cubs is that the Lions will have to pay a transfer fee for Dermody, which helps some. Overall, he has only pitched 26 1/3 innings over three seasons at the major league level. He had a 4.12 ERA at the Triple-A level with 74 strikeouts and 23 walks in 87 1/3 innings. The Blue Jays selected him in the 28th round of the 2013 draft.
