Cubs Minor League News: Two Dominican Summer League games suspended

by - Senior Writer -

While baseball may not be on the American side of things until Thursday, the same can't be said for the Dominican Summer League as it was business as usual on Monday despite an all-star break going on. With two teams in action, Cubs fans can at the very least hear about some of their younger prospects the next few days as they await the return of regular baseball.

For the most part, things were going ok with the Cubs losing one game and leading another as both games were suspended due to rain. One of those games will finish on Tuesday, while the other one will have to wait until Saturday for it to close.

DSL METS 5 - DSL CUBS BLUE 1 (Suspended in the fifth)

Granted, this game looks bleak for the Cubs right now; the only silver lining is that this game is not over as there are several innings to play. What was a close game early turned into a one-sided affair as the four-run fourth by the Mets is the difference right now.

Things have been a struggle for Adrian Martinez all season, but across three innings, he allowed just one unearned run in what could be his best start of the season. That run came in the first inning when a passed ball by Abel De Leon led to the Mets first run and a 1-0 lead.

With the score still sitting at 1-0 in the fourth, the Mets offense started to come to life as they put the Cubs in a massive hole. With an RBI fielder's choice making things 2-0, Dangelo Sarmiento followed that up with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0. Later that inning saw Carlos Oviedo come through with an RBI double to give the Mets a 5-0 lead.

Looking to bounce back in the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs got one of those runs back as Geuri Lubo picked up an RBI double to make things 5-1, which is where things stand. Lubo had one of the two hits thus far, with Jose Escobar grabbing the other.

DSL CUBS RED 1 - DSL PIRATES 0 (suspended in the 4th)

DSL Blue, the DSL Red squad, could not finish their contest with rain forcing a suspension in the fourth inning. However, things were a bit different as a strong pitching performance thus far has the Cubs in front 1-0, which is where things will begin on Tuesday.

Kenyi Valdez has been nothing short of impressive all summer, and you have to wonder if he will land stateside at some point. The 20-year-old has yet to pick up a win, but after throwing three scoreless frames to begin the day, his ERA fell to 1.90. Valdez also struck out five batters in three innings as he was on a mission from the start.

Up to this point, the lone run of the game came in the first inning, when the Cubs were coming out strong. Alexis Hernandez started the game with a leadoff single and would wind up at third after swiping second and reaching third on a costly throwing error. That single was followed up by a single from Andrws Cruz, and just like that, the Cubs were up 1-0. Cruz added a second hit in the third inning, but that is where things stand now with the Cubs taking this 1-0 lead into Tuesday.
