Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell addressed the media before Saturday's game about Julian Merryweather, Pete Crow-Armstrong's batting progression, and more.

"Julian had a rough year last year. I think there were some health factors that he addressed in the offseason with the knee. He was down in velocity last year. That's one thing we have to acknowledge," Counsell said about Merryweather.

Counsell hopes that Merryweather can get back to throwing high velocity on his fastball.

"It's a real thing for all these guys. Julian's kind of operating at the upper end of velocities too in '23. Being a healthier version of Julian can hopefully get him back to some of those velocities."

Watch the interview below:

Video summary/cliff-notes:

Julian Merryweather's Health & Performance (00:00-00:37)

Struggled last season due to health issues, particularly with his knee.

His velocity was down compared to 2023, which is a key concern.

A healthier version of Merryweather could help regain lost velocity.

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s Growth & Expectations (01:21-02:34)

Acknowledges Pete will face ups and downs like any player.

The focus is on consistency and minimizing slumps.

Improvement is expected as he gains experience.

Mindset Shift for Pete Crow-Armstrong (03:12-03:54)

Last year, he was too focused on making the team.

This year, he has a different mindset, now focusing on performance.

Avoiding pressure of needing to be "great" immediately.

Past Struggles & Confidence Building (04:29-05:15)

Players like Crow-Armstrong and Miguel Amaya still remember struggles.

Success from last season has built confidence for 2025.

Matt Shaw's Progress (05:15-06:01)

On track with his development, will start field activities next week.

Owen Caissie’s Injury (06:01-06:49)

Sidelined due to a groin/adductor strain, missing spring training time.

Severity is unclear but likely a minor Grade 1 strain.

Nico Hoerner’s Recovery (07:28)

Progressing well in his throwing program, just needs time.

Automatic Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System (08:21)

Players can challenge calls, but it is not a rule yet.

No focus on ABS for now, will discuss more if it becomes a rule next year.
