Roster Moves: Cubs place Jason Heyward on IL, select outfielder from Triple-A Iowa

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected outfielder Narciso (nahr-SEE-soh) Crook from Triple-A Iowa and placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 27) with right knee inflammation. Additionally, outfielder Michael Hermosillo has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Crook, who will wear uniform number 24, is looking to make his major league debut in tonight’s 7:05 p.m. CT game against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

Crook, 26, has played in 47 games with Triple-A Iowa this season, batting .268 (42-for-157) with seven doubles, two triples, nine homers, 27 RBI, 11 stolen bases and an .885 OPS. He has seen time in right field (20 games), left field (17 games), first base (eight games) and designated hitter (two games). The right-handed hitting outfielder is batting .345 (29-for-84) with four doubles, one triple, seven homers and 19 RBI in 22 games in June. He homered in four consecutive games, June 10-14.

The six-foot, three-inch Crook signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on November 16, 2021 after spending the first eight seasons of his professional career with the Cincinnati Reds organization. All told, he has appeared in 564 career minor league games, compiling a .253 average (464-for-1,835) with 103 doubles, 22 triples, 59 home runs, 257 RBI, 67 stolen bases and a .752 OPS.

A Nagua, D.R. native, Crook was selected by the Reds in the 23rd round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester. He is a graduate of Trenton Central High School in Trenton, N.J.

Heyward, 32, owns a .204 batting average (28-for-137) with five doubles, one triple, one home run and 10 RBI in 48 games for the Cubs this season.

Hermosillo, 27, was originally added to the 10-day injured list on May 8 with a left quadriceps strain. Prior to that, he was hitting .071 (2-for-28) with one double, two RBI and four walks in 17 games for Chicago this season.
