Cubs News: Anthony Rizzo leaves game due to injury

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo departed Tuesday's game at Wrigley Field due to an undisclosed injury. Rizzo was seen grimacing in pain prior to the start of the fourth inning and was subsequently evaluated by trainers. He remained in the game for the remainder of the half-inning but did not retake the field in the top of the fifth.

With the Cubs leading the Washington Nationals 2-0, an ailing Rizzo suffered his first error in nearly 100 games when he misplayed a grounder hit by former Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber. The top of the fourth ended with Rizzo capping off an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, but he was then captured on the dugout camera heading to the clubhouse for further evaluation of the nagging injury.

Kris Bryant replaced Rizzo in the field by moving from right field to first base in the top of the fifth, and Jason Heyward entered to take over in right field. Rizzo seemed to be dealing with some kind of injury to his torso. Perhaps the humidity of the drizzly night in Chicago contributed to it. Also of note, Rizzo went all out when making a leaping grab earlier in the game, but it is not yet known when he was injured. His final plate appearance of the evening, which occurred shortly before he showed signs of discomfort, was a groundout that ended the third inning.

UPDATE: The Cubs later announced that Rizzo left the game because of lower back tightness.
