Cubs News: Justin Steele on his recent leg injury

by - Senior Editor -

Cubs nation got a huge scare when ace pitcher Justin Steele left Friday's game after sustaining a left knee injury while trying to field a groundball.

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell expects Steele to be 100 percent for his Opening Day start against the World Champion Texas Rangers.

“He's doing well,” Counsell told MLB.com. “He walked in today in very good shape, bouncing around pretty good. So, [I’m] not concerned.”

Steele was confused at first when he got hurt.

“Initially, it hit my leg, and I was like, ‘All right, where’d the ball go?’” Steele said. “And I went to put weight on my leg, and it just wasn’t really working. So I just fell down and rolled into it. For probably about 15 seconds, it just kind of like my leg was kind of stove up from the knee down. So, I was trying to get some feeling back into it and stuff.

Steele shook off the injury and is not worried about missing any game action despite being a little sore.

“Other than that, once we got back in the dugout and got in the tunnel and started moving around, got some blood flowing to it, it started coming back. I’d just say it’s sore right now, a little bruised up, but nothing to worry about.”

Steele had a 16-5 record with a 3.06 ERA in 30 starts last season.
