Cubs News: Willson Contreras injury update

by - Senior Writer -

PITTSBURGH – Thankfully, Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras did not suffer a serious injury when he was hit on the wrist by a wild pitch thrown by closer Craig Kimbrel on Sunday night. In the 10th and final inning of the Cubs' 2-1 victory at Busch Stadium over the St. Louis Cardinals, Contreras was crossed up, resulting in his left wrist getting drilled by the baseball.

After corralling the wild pitch, Contreras was in obvious pain but able to continue catching after being evaluated by trainers. Manager David Ross announced on Tuesday that Contreras' X-rays came back clean, with Contreras suffering nothing more than a wrist contusion.

P.J. Higgins started behind the plate in Tuesday night's series opener at PNC Park versus the Pittsburgh Pirates, but Contreras might appear in the contest after taking batting practice on Tuesday afternoon. Regardless, Contreras should be returning to action in the very near future.
