Cubs place Jason Heyward on 10-day IL, call up Nick Martini

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and recalled outfielder Nick Martini from Triple-A Iowa.

Martini, 30, begins his second stint with Chicago as he went 1-for-5 in five contests after he was selected by the Cubs on May 7. He was optioned, May 14, and has since gone 2-for-9 with two doubles and an RBI in three games for Iowa.

Martini has appeared in 66 major league games with Oakland (2018-19), San Diego (2019) and the Cubs, hitting .268 (67-for-250) with 13 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 26 RBI in 92 games. The left-handed hitter owns a .369 on-base percentage and has appeared in 75 games in left field, two in center field and one in right field.

A native of Crystal Lake, Ill., Martini signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in January after spending the 2020 campaign at the Phillies Alternate Training Site.

Originally selected by St. Louis in the seventh round of the 2011 draft, Martini owns a .271 average (886-for-3,270) with 166 doubles, 28 triples, 45 home runs and 406 RBI in 931 career minor league games. The left-handed hitter has a .367 on-base percentage and has stolen 64 bases in minor league play while seeing time in center field (297 games), right field (279 games), left field (234 games) and first base (54).

Heyward, 31, has batted .183 (23-for-126) with six doubles, a triple, four home runs and 13 RBI in 39 games for Chicago this season.
