CHICAGO — Providing the Chicago Cubs with an early 3-0 lead atop the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday afternoon, Javier Baez crushed a go-ahead three-run jack with one out in the bottom of the first. The shortstop slugged his team-leading 22nd home run of the year with a 424-foot dinger to left-center field, increasing his team-high RBI total to 64.
Sparking a buzz at Wrigley Field, Baez got underneath a first-pitch breaking ball and lifted it into the bleachers. Starter Zac Gallen was taken deep on an 88.9-mph slider, as Baez walloped it off the bat at 105.8 mph and 25 degrees. Baez plated left fielder Kris Bryant, who walked, and first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who was hit by a pitch.
