WATCH: Willson Contreras takes Jon Lester deep with leadoff blast |
CHICAGO — Taking his former batterymate deep on Monday, Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras smashed a leadoff shot to left off Jon Lester to begin the bottom of the third. Lester gave up two early-inning bombs in his return to Wrigley Field, with right fielder Jason Heyward going yard via a two-run bomb to left earlier in the contest.
The 365-footer, Contreras' eighth long ball of the year, put the Cubs up 4-1 over the Washington Nationals and followed shortstop Trea Turner powering out a 423-foot solo shot off starter Adbert Alzolay with two outs in the top of the third. Coming on an 88-mph cutter, Contreras' round-tripper left the bat at 101.8 mph and 24 degrees. The 2021 RBI total for the backstop now stands at 19. 8th home run of the season for @WContreras40!#CubTogether pic.twitter.com/Wl2EqjUAOZ #Nationals 1 @ #Cubs 4 [B3-0o]:
