Chicago Cubs sign lefty reliever Matt Dermody

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a deal with reliever Matt Dermody on a minor league deal, according to multiple reports.

Dermody played last season in Japan with the Seibu Lions of the Nippon Professional League, striking out 48 batters in 57.2 innings with a 5.13 ERA.

This is his third stint with the Cubs if his name seems familiar. The big lefty had one appearance with the Northsiders in 2020, which was his latest action in the big leagues.

Overall, he has a 5.13 ERA with the Cubs and Blue Jays over only 26 1/3 career innings.

This is a low-risk signing, and the 31-year old will be invited to spring training, and we shall see how it all unfolds for him and the Cubs.

It's always good to add depth with your relievers, especially of the lefty variety.
