Willson Contreras after loss to Cardinals: "Everybody was distracted" |
It has been an extremely tough stretch of ballgames of the Chicago Cubs of late.
The Northsiders have lost 13 of 15 games, and the All-Star break can't get here fast enough to give them a chance to regroup. The Cubs were blanked 6-0 against their rival Cardinals on Saturday at Wrigley Field. Cubs starting catcher Willson Contreras talked to the media following the loss and had some tough comments about his teammates. “No, I don’t, to be honest (teammates' efforts)," Contreras admitted. "I feel like everybody was off. Everybody was distracted. I don’t know why. Probably because the All-Star break is pretty close. (Sunday) is the last day of the first half. I don’t think that way, but I didn’t think we were on today.” Contreras doesn't expect everyone to be as intense as Baez and himself. “That’s on everybody’s work ethic and job,” he said. “We have to win as a team, but also I cannot ask everybody to play like I do or to play like Baez and I play. Everyone is different. I know they might be tired, but I’m here to win. I’m here to compete, and that’s what I like to (get) from everybody else.” Contreras had a hit and three strikeouts in four plate appearances on Saturday. For the season, he is batting .236 with 13 homers and 31 RBIs.
