Roster Moves: Cubs place Justin Steele on IL, recall reliever |
ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher Justin Steele on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain and recalled left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck from Triple-A Iowa.
Wieck, 29, begins his third stint with the club this season as he has been with the Cubs April 12-14 and May 11-14. The southpaw has made two relief appearances for Chicago, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings, walking one and striking out three. Wieck has tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in three relief outings for Iowa, walking three and striking out seven. Wieck made the 2020 Cubs Opening Day roster but appeared in just one game before being placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain that sidelined him for the rest of the season. In 2019, he pitched in a career-high 44 major league games between the Padres and Cubs, going 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA (4 ER/10.0 IP) in 14 games with Chicago. Wieck was acquired by the Cubs at the 2019 trade deadline for pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. and international bonus money. In 52 career major league relief appearances for the Padres (2018-19) and Cubs (2019-21), Wieck is 2-2 with a 5.04 ERA (25 ER/44.2 IP) with 15 walks and 64 strikeouts. Steele, 25, is 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA (3 ER/13.1 IP) and 21 strikeouts compared to seven walks in 11 relief appearances for Chicago. He has a 1.05 WHIP in his first career major league action.
