Cubs make several roster moves including recalling David Bote

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today made the following roster moves:

RHP Adrian Sampson and LHP Justin Steele reinstated from the restricted list.

Substitute RHP Jeremiah Estrada returned to Triple-A Iowa then selected from Iowa.

Substitute LHP Brendon Little returned to Iowa.

INF David Bote recalled from Iowa.

LHP Wade Miley transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Sampson, 30, is 1-4 with a 3.97 ERA (29 ER/65.2 IP) in 14 games (12 starts) for the Cubs this season. In parts of two campaigns with Chicago he has posted a 3.56 ERA (40 ER/101.0 IP) with a 2-6 record, 25 walks and 78 strikeouts in 24 games (17 starts). Sampson is 8-18 with one complete game and a 4.85 ERA (137 ER/254.0 IP) in 65 major league games (37 starts) with Seattle (2016), Texas (2018-19) and the Cubs.

Steele, 27, is 4-7 with a 3.18 ERA (42 ER/119.0 IP) in 24 starts for Chicago in 2022. He has posted a 0.98 ERA (4 ER/36.2 IP) in seven starts since July 22, the second-lowest ERA in the majors during that span (min. seven starts). Selected by Chicago in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of George County High School in Lucedale, Miss., Steele is 8-11 with a 3.53 ERA (69 ER/176.0 IP), 77 walks and 185 strikeouts in 44 games (33 starts) since making his big league debut with the Cubs last season.

Estrada, 23, made his major league debut August 30 in Toronto with a scoreless inning of relief. He is 3-2 with a 1.30 ERA (7 ER/48.1 IP), nine saves, 20 walks and 78 strikeouts in 34 games out of the bullpen with Single-A South Bend, Double-A Tennessee and Iowa in 2022. Selected by the Cubs in the sixth round of the 2017 draft out of Palm Desert (Calif.) High School in Palm Desert, Calif., Estrada owns a career 4-4 record with a 1.94 ERA (19 ER/88.1 IP) and nine saves in 52 minor league games (three starts).

Bote, 29, has played in 20 games for Iowa since he was optioned August 4 and has batted .224 (17-for-76) with two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI. He started the season on the 60-day injured list while recovering from left shoulder surgery and was activated by Chicago June 24 before he batted .259 (14-for-54) with three doubles, one home run and three RBI in 21 contests. Since making his major league debut with the Cubs in 2018, Bote has hit .229 (219-for-957) with 42 doubles, five triples, 33 home runs and 141 RBI in 364 games.

Little, 26, made his major league debut August 30 in Toronto, allowing three earned runs in 0.2 innings. He is 3-3 with a 4.15 ERA (18 ER/39.0 IP) and one save in 29 games in relief for Iowa this season. He has a 1.06 ERA (2 ER/17.0 IP) in his last 13 Triple-A appearances since July 1, limiting right-handed hitters to a .225 average (20-for-89). Little, the Cubs’ first-round selection (27th overall) in the 2017 draft, is 10-19 with a 4.61 ERA (130 ER/253.2 IP) and four saves in 95 career minor league games (39 starts).

Miley, 35, was placed on the 15-day injured list June 11 with a left shoulder strain. He has made five rehab starts since July 29, tossing 18.0 innings, including 3.2 innings (two earned runs) last night with High-A South Bend. Miley has made four starts for Chicago this season, going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA (6 ER/19.0 IP).
