Cubs activate David Ross, Clayton Richard

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated catcher David Ross off of the seven-day concussion disabled list and activated left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard off of the 15-day disabled list. Right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 9) with patellar tendinitis in his right knee and infielder Munenori Kawasaki was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. In addition, right-handed pitcher Joel Peralta has cleared waivers and elected free agency.

Both Ross and Richard will be available for the Cubs this afternoon as they begin their three-game series against the Texas Rangers at Wrigley Field.

Ross, 39, was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list on July 6. He is batting .234 (25-for-107) with six homers and 23 RBI in 43 games. He leads the majors with a 2.65 catchers ERA.

Richard, 32, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 21 with a blister on his left middle finger. He made four rehab starts as part of his return, combining to go 0-1 with a 2.13 ERA (3 ER/12.2 IP) between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. In the majors this season, Richard has gone 0-1 with one save and a 7.30 ERA (10 ER/12.1 IP) in 22 relief outings for the Cubs.

Cahill, 28, has gone 1-3 with a 3.07 ERA (14 ER/41.0 IP) in 33 relief appearances with the Cubs this season.

Kawasaki, 35, is batting .267 (55-for-206) with nine doubles, one triple and 11 stolen bases in 62 games with Iowa this season. He has hit .333 (1-for-3) in three games during his pair of stints with the Cubs this season.

Peralta, 40, went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (4 ER/4.0 IP) in five relief outings with the Cubs.
