Cubs News: Christopher Morel: "I want to be a superstar" |
Chicago Cubs utility infielder/outfielder Christopher Morel was finally called up to the big leagues on Monday after a sizzling start to the 2023 season for the Iowa Cubs.
The Cubs were impressed with his play including Cubs manager David Ross. "He’s proven that Triple-A, he’s better than that league and deserves a shot here," Ross said to the media. Morel, 23, batted .330 (38-for-115) with nine doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 31 RBI, a .425 on-base percentage, a .730 slugging percentage, and a 1.155 OPS in 29 games for Iowa this season. Morel is the Cubs' Swiss army knife as he can pretty much play anywhere on the field as he played second base Tuesday and was the Cubs’ designated hitter Wednesday. "I want to be a superstar," Morel said to reporters Wednesday. "Everywhere I play, I want to be the best player I can be for my team. I want to be there for my teammates and the Cubs organization. "Right now, I don't think about what position they play me at. I just will enjoy playing wherever the team needs me. Getting a W is the point of the game. We focus on getting a championship here." Morel knows if he can just focus on the game, he can be successful. "It's simple for me on defense – just concentrate on catching the ball and being smart at that position. Just always think about what to do correctly at each position. Hitting-wise, I concentrated on my timing and hitting good pitches. Just slow the game down and play the game in a smart way." Morel has gotten off to a great start with the Cubs going 4-for-8 with a double, homer and three RBIs in two games.
