Cubs prospect Brennen Davis homers twice, named MVP of Futures Game

by - Senior Writer -

DENVER — Taking advantage of the Coors Field altitude, Chicago Cubs prospect Brennen Davis hit two home runs in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday and was named the MVP of the contest. Davis, a center fielder for the Double-A Tennessee Smokies, is the No. 2-rated prospect in the Cubs' farm system.

The 21-year-old is integral to the Cubs' future, and he showcased why by crushing two solo blasts and leading the National League to an 8-3 victory over the American League in the seven-inning affair. Davis' first dinger was a 428-foot bomb that sailed out to straightaway center field in the bottom of the fourth, and the second was a lined shot that was hammered out to left field in the bottom of the sixth.

Davis started in right field and batted sixth in the lineup, going 2-for-3 with one strikeout in his three plate appearances at the home of the Colorado Rockies. He became just the third-ever player to homer twice in the Futures Game. The first to do so was former Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who swatted a pair of round-trippers in the 1999 event.

As the No. 45-rated prospect in all of baseball, Davis lived up to the hype en route to taking home the MVP honor. Fellow Cubs prospect Manuel Rodriguez, a relief pitcher for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, also suited up in Sunday's tilt, tossing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for the National League.
