Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay out for the season

by - Senior Editor -

Tough news for the Cubs bullpen as closer Adbert Alzolay likely won't pitch against in 2024 with a right flexor strain in his forearm.

“Adbert is going to have surgery,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Thursday. “He’s seeking second opinions just to determine kind of exactly what [surgery] and where he’s going to have surgery.”

Counsell knew something was not right when Alzolay wasn't recovering after pitching in games.

“It's from the initial injury that kept him out. Obviously, he got to a point where he was feeling good and was pitching, and then through the outings, he just couldn’t recover,” Counsell said. “You knew something’s wrong when you’re not recovering.”

Alzolay was 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in 18 appearances this season.

The 29-year-old is still under team control through the 2026 season.
