Cubs reliever Yency Almonte out for the season

by - Senior Editor -

Not good news for a thin bullpen.

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell told the media Saturday that right-handed reliever Yency Almonte will have shoulder surgery and be out for the rest of the season.

Almonte went on the IL on May 11.

This season, he has posted an impressive 3.45 ERA in 17 appearances for the Cubs.

He was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodges during the offseason.

In other Cubs injury news, Julian Merryweather and Mark Leiter will be throwing live batting practice today.

Merryweather will join South Bend for a rehab stint next week.

The Cubs hope to activate Leiter on the upcoming road trip.

Javier Assad had a good bullpen session on Friday.

Adbert Alzolay threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday in Arizona and is trending up on his rehab.
