Cubs trade veteran catcher to White Sox

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have acquired catcher Matt Thaiss (“THICE”) in exchange for cash considerations.

Thaiss, 29, spent the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Angels, hitting .204 (32-157) with nine doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI over 57 games. He was acquired by the Cubs from the Angels in exchange for cash considerations on November 20.

Thaiss, 6-foot and 215 pounds, is a career .208/.313/.342 hitter with 23 doubles, 22 homers and 79 RBI in 245 games over six major-league seasons with the Angels (2019-24). He has appeared in 142 games at catcher, 47 at third base, 31 at first, one at second and one in left field.

Thaiss, a native of Jackson, N.J., originally was selected by the Angels in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Virginia.

The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
