Former Cubs catcher designated for assignment

That didn't last long.

Former Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Montero was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. The move will open a spot up for catcher Matt Wieters who has recovered from an oblique injury and activated from the disabled list.

The Nationals will now have a week to trade, release, or waive Montero after putting him on the DFA'd list.

The 34-year old veteran nicknamed 'Miggy' was hitless this season going 0-11 with two walks, and three strikeouts.

Last season, Montero was sent down as he was demoted by the Cubs after some controversial remarks about Jake Arrieta and holding baserunners.

The Cubs have been in great shape at the catcher position this season with youngster Victor Caratini, starter Willson Contreras, and Kyle Schwarber as the emergency catcher.
