Former Cubs pitcher Brian Matusz passes away |
Former Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz has passed away at the young age of 37.
No word yet on the cause of death. The Baltimore Orioles released a heartfelt statement: “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz. A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face. Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.” Matusz, who the Orioles selected as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, was a key figure in Baltimore’s pitching staff during his time with the team. He made one appearance for the Chicago Cubs, an emergency start on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball in July 2016. Overall, Matusz compiled a 27-41 record with a 4.92 ERA in 280 career MLB appearances.
