Hoyer reacts to Marcus Stroman's tweet about not having contract talks with Cubs

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer remained tight-lipped when asked about contract talks with starting pitcher Marcus Stroman during a media session on Thursday.

Stroman had recently expressed his desire to stay in Chicago, emphasizing his interest in remaining with the team beyond his current contract, which includes an opt-out clause allowing him to explore free agency in the offseason.

"My agent and I made multiple attempts to engage them on an extension," Stroman tweeted. "The club wasn't interested in exploring it now. We will see how it plays out! Love everything about the @Cubs organization!"

Stroman's comments made headlines, and reporters wasted no time asking Hoyer for his reaction.

"I mean, honestly, like I've talked about a million times: we just don't talk about those things," Hoyer said. "Obviously, he made that public, and listen; I love the fact that he wants to be here. And we've had conversations about it. I'm not going to disclose what we've talked about, but there's dialogue, and we'll keep that in-house."

Hoyer's approach to contract negotiations aligns with the Cubs' longstanding policy of conducting business discreetly and avoiding unnecessary distractions. By keeping contract discussions private, the organization can maintain focus on the game and minimize potential disruptions.

Marcus Stroman's performance on the field, with 12 quality starts this season, has undoubtedly bolstered his position in contract negotiations. The talented pitcher has been having a stellar season, consistently delivering impressive outings for the Cubs.

In 85.2 innings pitched, he has a 2.42 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP.

Stroman will be pitching on Thursday night as the Cubs will try to get the much-needed home sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
