MLB legend Vida Blue passes away at age 73 |
The baseball community is in mourning as news of the passing of Vida Blue, a beloved player who had a storied career, broke on Saturday evening.
"It is with great sadness that the Blue family mourn the passing of our beloved father Vida Blue," a statement from his family read. "Vida was a great father, grandfather, brother, friend, and teammate who will be forever cherished, honored and loved. We appreciate your uplifting prayers as we deal with the overwhelming loss of our father. We ask for respect and privacy during this challenging time." MLB released a statement on Sunday morning, expressing their condolences and acknowledging the remarkable achievements of the late pitcher. "We mourn the passing of Vida Blue, a Cy Young, MVP, and three-time World Series winner. He was 73," the statement read. The Oakland Athletics, with whom Blue spent the majority of his career, also released a statement expressing their condolences and recognizing his contributions to the team. "There are few players with a more decorated career than Vida Blue. He was a three-time champion, an MVP, a six-time All-Star, a Cy Young Award winner, and an Oakland A's Hall of Famer," the statement read. "Vida will always be a franchise legend and a friend. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this arduous time." Blue was a six-time All-Star and a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame.
