Cubs place pitcher on bereavement list, recall reliever

by -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher Brian Duensing on the bereavement list and recalled left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny from Triple-A Iowa.

Zastryzny will be available for the Cubs tonight as they begin their three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The 26-year-old Zastryzny joins the Cubs for the second time this year, spending one day with the club on May 8 and tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief that night against the Miami Marlins. Zastryzny has now spent parts of the last three seasons (2016-18) in the big leagues with the Cubs, combining to go 1-0 with a 4.06 ERA (14 ER/31.0 IP) in 13 major league appearances, all but one in relief. With Iowa this year, Zastryzny has gone 2-1 with a 3.97 ERA (15 ER/34.0 IP) in 17 relief outings.

The southpaw was originally selected by the Cubs in the second round of the 2013 Draft out of the University of Missouri. He is 21-21 with one save and a 4.63 ERA (218 ER/424.0 IP) in 107 minor league appearances, including 78 starts, in six minor league campaigns.

Duensing, 35, is 2-0 with one save and a 4.50 ERA (11 ER/22.0 IP) in 31 relief appearances with the Cubs this season. The bereavement list requires a minimum absence of three days and a maximum absence of seven days.
