Report: Cubs trying to sign All-Star closer

by - Senior Editor -

Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings begin today and expect a flurry of activity as ballclubs try to bolster their chances for a run at the 2017 World Series title.

According to ESPN's MLB insider Jim Bowden on Monday morning, the Cubs, Nationals, Marlins, Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants are the teams trying to win the services of star closer Kenley Jansen.

In 2016, Jensen had a 1.83 ERA with 47 saves, 103 strikeouts, and 0.63 WHIP. He was also named as an All-Star and the best reliever with the Trevor Hoffman Award this past season.

Regardless, if the Cubs go shopping for a closer in the offseason, they still have in-house options Hector Rondon, Carl Edwards Jr., and Pedro Strop ready.

However, according to multiple reports, the Cubs are targeting help in the starting rotation and relief pitching in the coming months.
