CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar (THEEL-bar) on a one-year major league contract. The 40-man roster stands at 40 players.
Thielbar, 30, has played all eight of his major league seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Last season, he went 2-4 with a 5.32 (28 ER/47.1 IP) ERA in 59 relief appearances. Over his major league career, he is 23-12 with four saves and a 3.38 ERA (120 ER/320.0 IP) in 347 games as a reliever in two separate stints with the Twins (2013 – 15 and 2020-2024). He was awarded the Twins Bill Boni Outstanding Rookie Award in 2013 after going 3-2 with a 1.76 ERA in his first major league campaign. He has made 50-plus appearances in three of the last four major league seasons (2021 – 59, 2022 – career-high 67 and 2024 – 59). In 2021, he won a career-high seven games and turned in a 3.23 ERA. Originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 18th round of the 2009 draft of out South Dakota State, Thielbar is a native of Northfield, Minn. In addition to his time with the Twins and Brewers organizations, he has also played in the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres farm systems.
