CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated left-handed pitcher Wade Miley from the 60-day injured list and designated right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell for assignment. Additionally, the club today activated outfielder Michael Hermosillo from the 60-day injured list and placed catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 3) with a left ankle sprain. To make room for Hermosillo on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Nicholas Padilla has been designated for assignment.

Miley will make tonight’s start in Chicago’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at 6:40 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field.

Miley, 35, landed on the 15-day injured list on June 11 with a left shoulder strain and was transferred to the 60-day injured list on September 1. He is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA (6 ER/19.0 IP) in four starts for the Cubs this season, his first with the organization after he was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati November 5, 2021. The lefthander has also spent time on the injured list this season with left elbow inflammation (April 7-May 10) and a left shoulder strain (May 29, retroactive to May 26-June 10).

Miley is 98-92 with three complete games, two shutouts and a 4.13 ERA (735 ER/1,600.0 IP) in 287 major league games, all but six as a starter, with Arizona (2011-14), Boston (2015), Seattle (2016), Baltimore (2016-17), Milwaukee (2018), Houston (2019), Cincinnati (2020-21) and the Cubs. He is two victories away from 100 wins.

Hermosillo, 27, landed on the 10-day injured list on May 10 with a left quadriceps strain and was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 30. The right-handed hitting outfielder has played in 17 games with the Cubs this season, going 2-for-28 (.071) with a double and two RBI and recently completed a 10-game rehab assignment with the ACL Cubs and Iowa, batting .324 (11-for-34) with three doubles, one triple, one home run and three RBI.

An Ottawa, Ill. native, Hermosillo is in his second season with the Cubs organization after spending the first eight seasons of his professional career with the Los Angeles Angels. All told, Hermosillo has played in 89 career major league games, going 28-for-165 (.170) with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 15 RBI.
