Cubs suffer shutout loss in series finale against Brewers

by - Senior Writer -

MILWAUKEE — Dropping 2-of-3 for the third consecutive series, the Chicago Cubs (5-7) were on the wrong end of a shutout in the rubber match of their three-game series versus the Milwaukee Brewers (7-5). Behind a superb six-inning outing by Corbin Burnes, who struck out 10 in his winning start, the Brew Crew limited the Cubs to four hits and attained 7-0 victory at American Family Field, improving to 4-2 against the Cubs thus far this season.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit double off Jake Arrieta in the Brewers' first plate appearance of the game. Travis Shaw scored Bradley with a single, and Shaw came home on a sacrifice fly by Omar Narvaez. After falling down 2-0, the Cubs had a chance to put runs on the board in the second. Joc Pederson reached due to a passed ball on a third strike. An opposite field double by Jason Heyward moved Pederson to third with one out. A strikeout and a flyout followed, leaving both baserunners stranded. Shaw went yard off Arrieta with a solo shot in the bottom of the third, and the Brewers went on to garner a sizable lead with a four-run sixth.

In the sixth, Shelby Miller, a former Brewers minor leaguer, struggled in his Cubs debut, giving up two singles in a row before issuing three consecutive walks. After Miller walked in Avisail Garcia and Narvaez, Justin Steele took the mound and gave up an RBI single to Burnes that plated Keston Hiura and Billy McKinney. The sixth inning ended with Javy Baez making a stellar leaping grab at shortstop. To start the ninth, Anthony Rizzo doubled before Pederson was hit by a pitch. Neither Cub scored, however, with Josh Lindblom putting the finishing touches on the 7-0 shutout.
