Rizzo and Szczur help Cubs secure another win against Rangers |
CHICAGO -- The Rangers took the lead early, but it wasn’t enough as Anthony Rizzo put the Cubs on top 2-1 in the third and Matt Szczur advanced the lead in the 6th as the Cubs take game two against the Rangers with a score of 3-1.
The Cubs hoped to take their third consecutive win after yesterday’s victory as they faced the Rangers again Saturday afternoon. Jason Hammel came into the game looking for his first win since June 4th. The Rangers took the lead in the 2nd as Elvis Andrus reached on an infield single scoring Ryan Rua putting the score at 1-0. Anthony Rizzo knocked the Cubs on top with a two out double to right scoring Miguel Montero and Tommy La Stella putting them ahead 2-1. The Cubs add another run to their lead in the 6th as Matt Szczur gets an RBI as he pinch hit for Hammel, hitting a single to center and scoring Heyward. Jason Hammel ended the day with 6 innings pitched, 3 hits allowed, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts as Adam Warren entered the game. After 6 innings, the Cubs only had 4 hits and 9 strikeouts compared to the Rangers' 3 hits and 7 strikeouts. Travis Wood entered the game for the Cubs in the 7th to make his 46th appearance. The Cubs bullpen was able to get it done as Hector Rondon entered the game in the 9th inning and was able to get the save for the Cubs. The Cubs continue play at Wrigley Field as John Lackey will face Cole Hamels on the pitcher’s mound in tomorrow’s matchup.
